Ancestral Divination (Bones)

Throwing bones (tinhlolo) is one of the main tools used by sangomas to determine what is happening in a person's life, bodymind, spirit, soul, family, community; and how to approach healing. Throwing bones is a practice and a calling. Depending on the particular arrangement of the bones, the sangoma will interpret them using their own knowledge and the support + insight of their ancestors. Different bones have different meanings, and every sangoma will have bones that are unique to them (typically a mix of animal bones, dice, dominos, stones, or other items that are meaningful to the sangoma). Through this process, sangomas practice diviniation: they can see what has happened in the past, what is happening now, and what may or will happen in the future. This is how sangomas diagnose problems + identify which approach to take towards healing.
